SPLIT

 

Split is not only an urban, cultural and traffi c centre of Dalmatia with road and sea connections to Dalmatia’s numerous summer resorts, but it is itself often a tourist and excursionists destination. A city with a 1700-year old tradition, a variety of archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, among which the well-known Palace of Diocletian, inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List, certainly occupies a special position, and the warmth and off er of a modern Mediterranean city. The fi rst detailed tourist guide through the town and its surroundings, published in 1894, bears witness to the long tourist tradition in Split.

 

PODSTRANA, a town southeast of Split. Economy is based on farming and tourism. Podstrana is located on the main road (M2, E65). Podstrana features the remains from Roman times, probably the ancient Pituntium. Two small -churches of St. George date back to the early Middle Ages. It was mentioned in the sources that the peace treaty between Duke Mislav and the Vene-tian dodge Petro Tradeni was concluded near the church of St. Martin. Baroque structures include the parish church of St. Anthony and the Cindro house.
